The Best of the Best

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution found these public middle schools to be among the best in Georgia based on student scores on crucial exams given to third-, fifth- and eighth-grade students. The rankings are based on student scores in math and reading portions of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, which are given to all public school students in first through eighth grades.

The state tests are scored on scales that vary by subject. Scores fall into one of three categories: "does not meet," which means students failed; "meets expectations," which means students met basic requirements; or "exceeds expectations," which means students passed the exam at a high level.
