Mike Cloy, Athletic Director

Coach Cloy has been a teacher and coach for 34 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from U.T. Martin, a Masters in Administration and Supervision from GSU, and a Masters in Social Studies from GSU. He has been married to his wife, Linda, for 36 years. They have two sons: Brian-32 and Gavin-29.


Mike Donnalley, Physical Education Department Chair -- email

Coach Mike Donnalley is the Department Chair of Physical Education at Alpharetta High School. He comesto Alpharetta High from Cobb County where he has been a teacher and coach. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Delaware in 1979. After moving to Georgia from New Jersey in 1984, he earned his Masters in Physical Education from Georgia State. He is starting is 24th year of teaching and coaching. His background includes stints at Dunwoody High School, as well as, Lassiter, Marietta, Wheeler, and most recently Sprayberry High School. Mike was the Defensive Coordinator at above mentioned schools. He was the Head Football Coach at Wheeler High School from 1997 to 2001. His team was region champs in 1997. Coach Donnalley is a native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He and his wife, Karen, have a 14 year old daughter, Megan, who is a freshman at Lassiter High School. Karen is the IBM Director of Software salesfor the Americas.


Bill Waters, Head Football Coach

Coach Bill Waters comes to Alpharetta High School from Chattahoochee High School where he served as head football coach from 1993 to 2003 and developed one of the best programs in the state. He led the Cougars to five region championships, eight state playoff appearances in the past nine years and the state semifinals in the Georgia Dome in 1999. The football program record was 86-42 under his supervision.

Coach Waters was named Region Coach of the Year in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003. He was North Fulton County Coach of the Year four times and Georgia Athletic Directors Association Athletic Director of the Year in 1998-99.

His program produced eight All State football players and fifty collegiate football players. Division I quarterbacks include Charlie Whitehurst (Clemson), Ryan Busing (Miami of Ohio) and Jeff Klein (Auburn).



Meghan Ammons, Director of Cheerleading -- email

Coach Meghan Ammons comes to us from Auburn University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree for studying Math Education. She is the Head Cheerleading Coach for the Football/Competition Squad. Coach Ammons attended South Forsyth High School where she was a State Champion for Cheerleading for two out of the six years that they have won. She looks forward to coaching the first cheerleading squad at Alpharetta High. The cheerleaders' main goals are to implement school spirit and traditions.



Angela Anderson, Girls' Varsity Basketball Coach

Coach Angela Anderson comes to us from Wooldand High School in Cartersville. Georgia, where she has taught and coached since graduating in 1998. Angela coached basketball as an Varsity Assistant at Woodland for six years along with being the assistant girls' fast pitch coach, and head girls' golf coach. Angela also has coached the 15U Georgia Hotshots for the last four years. Her team has qualified for the national tournament all of the those years being one of the top teams in the state.

Coach Anderson graduated from Georgia State University in 1998, where she played basketball on full scholarship. While at Georgia State she was awarded the Anna Dunn Hustle Award for overallcharacter and athleticperformance for Georgia State athletes. In August of 2003, Angela graduated from Jacksonville State Univesity with her Masters in Education Administration.

Prior to coming to Georgia, Angela grew up in Sweetwater, Tennesee.



Sara Ashley, Lacrosse

Sara Ashley graduated from Miami University (OH) in 2001. Since then, she has been teaching social studies and coaching lacrosse at Milton High School. She has been fortunate to have been part of a very successful program, one that has a 30-3 record her last two years with the Varsity team. The Milton teams have been serious contenders in Georgia lacrosse, making the final four in the 2003 state playoffs. They have also carried a number of players that have developed to all state caliber. Originally from Pittsburgh, Coach Ashley played high school lacrosse at the goalie and attack positions. She is very excited about the challenge and opportunity to upstart the Alpharetta team. Please do not hesitate to contact her if interested.


Hershel Bennett, Boys' Varsity Basketball Coach

Coach Bennett comes to Alpharetta High School from Kell High School in Cobb County, where he served as a Varsity Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Golf Coach from 2002 to 2004. Prior to opening Kell, Coach Bennett opened Woodland High School in Bartow County as the Head Basketball and Head Golf coach in 1997. While at Woodland Coach Bennett's basketball team qualified for the state playoffs in their second year of varsity play. Before opening Woodland Coach Bennett spent three years at East Paulding High School and one year as an assistant at Fulton High School in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Before beginning his high school teaching and coaching career Coach Bennett spent five years on the staff at University of Tennessee as a Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant Coach.

Coach Bennett is a native of Johnson City, Tennessee. He and his wife, Gabrielle, have two wonderful daughters-Bronwyn (4) and Kensley (2).

Steve Kolkka, Boys' Varsity Tennis -- email
Coach Steve Kolkka comes to Alpharetta High School from Milton High School where he served as head boys' tennis coach for the past 4 years. He led the Eagles to 2 North Fulton Championships, 1 region 6AAAAA runner up, 1 region 6AAAAA Championship, qualified for the State Tournament 3 years in a row, and the AAAAA State Championship in 2003.

Coach Kolkka has 18 years experience coaching both girls and boys' tennis. Starting at North Springs his program produced multiple singles and doubles state champions along the way and then a AAA Team State Championship in 1993. He started the tennis program at Centennial High School; reaching the state tournament the second year that the school was open. He was named North Fulton Coach of the Year in 1993, and Georgia Professional Tennis Association Coach of the year in 2003. His coaching experience also includes JV football and Varsity Basketball.

Coach Kolkka is a Physical Education / Health teacher at Webb Bridge Middle School and will continue teaching there while coaching at Alpharetta. He has a BS from Montclair State University, NJ, and a Masters in Physical Education from North Georgia College and State University. He is married to Cheryl Kolkka who is also a teacher at South Forsyth Middle School; and they have a daughter Alyse (17) and a son David (13).

Michael G. Nance (“Mike”) is a long-time Atlanta resident, having attended both elementary and high school here (DeKalb Co.), where he developed an interest in soccer as it was just emerging as a high school sport. His awareness of the shortage of knowledgeable coaches contributed to his desire to become a high school teacher and coach. Returning to the DeKalb County school system after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1979, Coach Nance spent the next twenty-five years as the head boys' soccer coach at Cedar Grove (1979-1983) and Druid Hills (1983-2004). Prior to this season he had complied a won-loss record of 202-125-11, making him the winningest active coach in DeKalb and third on the all-time list. His Druid Hills teams had but one losing season in twenty-one, and last year's team set a school record in victories (17) and goals scored (105) in route to their seventh state playoff appearance. Currently his squad is making another playoff appearance as the Region 5-AAAA champions with a 14-2-3 record.

Coach Nance prizes success in academics as much as athletics and has high expectations for students and student-athletes. He has taught AP U.S. history since 1989 and has been an AP U.S. history “reader” for the College Board the last four years. He also teaches AP European history and AP United States government and politics.

Coach Nance is married to the former Melanie Snyder and they have one child, Renee, who will enter the fifth grade at Lake Windward in the fall.

Coach Phillips was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated in 1996 from Lakeside High School in Dekalb County. He continued on to college at Oglethorpe University where he played basketball. In 2000, he was named to the SCAC All Academic Team. He graduated with a BA in History and a minor in education from Oglethorpe. That year he started his teaching career at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Cobb County (another new school). He has taught and coached basketball the last four years at Kennesaw. This past summer Coach Phillips graduated from the State University of West Georgia with a Masters in Education in Administration and Supervision.

Michael Scheifflee, Boys' Lacrosse Coach

Outside the art classroom, Coach Scheifflee will head the boys' lacrosse team. As a founding member of the men's lacrosse team at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he possesses the knowledge necessary to build a strong athletic program. Providing team support as Vice President, Social Advisor and Captain of IUP's team, Scheifflee was able to assist his teammates in making their club one of the schools most successful athletic organizations. Coach Scheifflee played both high school and collegiate lacrosse at the mid field position and also has strong defensive experience. Coach Sweigart comes to us from Milton High School where he taught Diversified Technology and coached football for the last three years. Throughout his coaching career, Coach Sweigart has served as a Varsity linebackers coach, Varsity defensive ends coach, JV football head coach, and JV defensive coordinator. Coach Sweigart also served as Centennial High School's 9th grade offensive and defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. He is a graduate of Auburn University and has eight years of football playing experience.

Coach Sweigart teaches Pre-Engineering and Drafting in addition to coaching football and golf at Alpharetta High School. Coach Sweigart resides in Roswell with his wife, Jennifer,daughter, Callen (3), and son, Luke (born 3-8-05).

Coach Tubiak was the AHS JV Girls' coach last year, after having coached at Milton previously. She lettered all four years in high school, three of which she played at Milton High School.


Douglas Yeager, Fastpitch Softball -- email -- AHS Fastpitch Softball Website

Coach Yeager comes to Alpharetta from Harriet Tubman Elementary School in Fulton County. He has been with Fulton County for five years teaching Special Education. He is a native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where he was a two-time American Legion All-Western Pennsylvania All-Star in baseball. He received a scholarship to play baseball at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and a Masters of Science in Special Education from Mercyhurt.

Coach Yeager has coached the 9th grade Baseball team at Woodward Academy for the last four years as a community coach. His latest team finished with an impressive 15-1 record. He also was an assistant JV basketball coach at Woodward for a year.
