Accelerated Reader (AR) is a supplementary, independent reading program that encourages students to improve their reading skills by practicing reading.

To participate, students choose a book to read that has an associated test. After reading the book, the student takes a short computerized test on the book and earns points. At Alpharetta Elementary student points are rewarded with AR Buttons and Book Dollars. Attained goals, outstanding achievements and special recognitions are posted on the Accelerated Reader Bulletin Board each month.

Alpharetta Elementary currently offers over 6900 tests.

Who can participate?

The AR program is open to all students in grades 2 through 5 and second semester 1st graders.

When can we take tests:

Students can take AR tests before, during and after school. The program administering the tests is available:

Monday through Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Check with the Media Center for beginning and ending school year dates.

How can we take tests?

Students read a book or listen to one being read that has a test associated with it. After completing the book, students use the classroom or Media Center computers to take a short multiple choice quiz. The AR program provides the test results, gives corrected answers and accumulates the points. The tests are to be taken without assistance or use of the book. Students may take each test once while at Alpharetta Elementary.

Expanded testing option for 4th and 5th grades:

AES 4th and 5th graders may choose any book to earn AR points by taking a paper test if a computer test is not available. Paper test forms may be obtained from the teacher or the Media Center. When completed, forms are returned to the Media Center for processing. Paper tests forms are to be completed at school without assistance or the use of the book and are not to be taken home. Forms are available for both fiction and nonfiction books.

What can we do with the points we earn?

The AR program accumulates points earned by test for each student. At the end of each week, parent volunteers check point listings and distribute AR Buttons and AR Book Dollars based on the Award Levels.

What are AR Buttons and AR Book Dollars?

AR Buttons and Book Dollars are awarded at the end of each week based on Award Levels. AR Buttons are badges denoting the level of achievement that can be pinned to items such as clothing or backpacks or simply collected! AR Book Dollars can be spent at the monthly AR Book Store held in the Media Center or saved and used at the AES Book Fairs to buy books just like real dollars!

What are the AR Award Levels?

At each Award Level, the student will receive an AR Button imprinted with the level achieved and an AR Book Dollar. Award Levels are based on the total points earned at the cut off (Thursday evening) for the end of each week.
