Dear Middle School Parents:

The Fulton County School System has begun planning for its 2009 summer school program and there are several changes affecting middle school students.  Please keep the following information in mind as you discuss your child’s progress with his or her teachers throughout the school year.

1.       Morning and afternoon sessions to be offered.  The 2009 summer school program will offer an opportunity to take two classes – one in the morning (starting around 8:30 a.m.) and one in the afternoon (starting around 12:30 p.m.).  Each class will last about three hours.  In the past, students attended the full day even if they needed only one summer school class.

2.       Classes to be offered based on need.  Students will attend summer school based on their need.  If they need two classes, they may attend all day.  However, if they need only one class, they will attend either in the morning or in the afternoon depending on when the class can be offered at the summer school site.

3.       Changes affecting eighth graders only.  Eighth graders who score at Level I (Below Expectations) in reading and/or math on the CRCT must retake the test(s) during the summer or they will be retained.  The school system will offer summer school classes to prepare the students for the retests.  Students that do not participate in these classes may still be retested at the summer school site.  There will be no charge for these services to eighth graders.

4.       Changes affecting all middle school students.  Sixth, seventh and eighth graders who fail a subject (other than reading and/or math in eighth grade) and are being retained must attend summer school if they want to recover the credit and be promoted to the next grade.  In the past, this service has been provided at no cost. However, there will now be a charge of $100 for each class that is taken.  Students who are currently eligible for free/reduced meals will pay a reduced price of $75 per class.  There will be no waivers of these fees.

5.       Transportation changes.  Bus transportation will be provided at the beginning and end of each school day.  Any students that need to arrive or leave during the middle of the day must provide their own transportation.

More information about 2009 summer school will be provided later in the year as students are identified for the program. However, if you have immediate questions, please contact your school administrative team or Dr. Annie Duvall, the system’s summer school program coordinator, at Duvall@fultonschools.org or 404-669-8090 ext 158.

Sincerely,
