TAILGATE PARTIES

The students and staff at Independence High School are touched in many ways by the generosity of our former neighbors, Roswell Presbyterian Church . Dedicated in her role as coordinator of the Independence High School outreach, Judy Boyd inspired activities to open the channels of communication between the church and school. Literally hundreds of church members responded to the plea to sponsor the Roswell Presbyterian Church "Tailgate" parties hosted for the staff and students at Independence High School.

This ongoing event gives the students a "break" where the church members serve snacks and beverages. The Tailgate serves to provide a message that there are adults who care about teen safety and teen well-being. Prior to Tailgates, both the students and church members saw each other on a daily basis, but they did not interact. The Tailgate focuses on breaking down the barriers between the groups to show an appreciation for each other and respective properties.

The popularity and enjoyment experienced from both the church and the school has grown tremendously. What started out in 1998 as three boxes of donuts and a thermos of coffee has grown under the coordination of Pat Roberts to a seemingly-endless supply of snacks, sweets, homemade goodies and bottled water for Independence students and staff.

The real success of the Tailgate is not only the increased involvement but also the lasting memories shared with neighbors.

This poem is dedicated to the memory of

We sometimes take for granted
in the rush of all we do,
and forget to say a heartfelt thanks
to “special friends” like you.

So we send this note to tell you
how much all that you did means;
your gifts of time and of yourself
were special gifts indeed!

As a neighbor you were willing
to take a chance and see
that there’s not a real big difference
between people like You and Me!

You brought our community together
with your caring, neighborly ways --
from “tailgate” parties, parenting luncheons,
and teacher appreciation days.

Judy, you taught by your example
and always led the way
to make Independence High School
feel encouraged in a special way.

The legacy of activities
that you have left behind
will forever be cherished treasures
in our “Independence” mind.

We pray for peace and happiness
as you move from here to there,
and hope that you will always know
you taught us the meaning of “care!”
