As part of the Parenting Education Program, Independence High School offers child care for teen parents at low cost.

All participants using the daycare facilities are required to attend the Parent Support Group meetings. This program offers a support group for pregnant and parenting students whether they use the child care services or not.

The Daycare Center has two large, colorful rooms and an outdoor playground area. The infant room can serve six infants and is managed by Ms. Deandra Burke. The toddler room can serve up to eight toddlers and is taught by Ms. Dolores Shamis. Students in Child Development and Parenting and Early Childhood Education classes work with the children in the daycare for 10-15 hours to fulfill the lab requirement for their classes.

One of the student mothers recently wrote: "The daycare is a great place for our children to go to. It is a safe and secure facility. I'm very thankful for a wonderful place like this."

Independence High School Daycare Program

Participant Guidelines 2008-2009

Welcome to the daycare program offered by Independence High School . This program is designed to offer teenage parents the opportunity to complete their high school education as well as to improve their parenting skills. In order to serve all students effectively, we must ask participating students to follow some basic guidelines. This is not a full service daycare center and is offered at a very reduced rate so that students can attend class and graduate. Please read these guidelines carefully. Your signature signifies that you have read, understood, and agreed to comply with these requirements.

  1. Parents may bring breakfast for the daycare staff to feed the children in the daycare. Parents of toddlers are expected to bring lunch for them. Parents of infants need to bring all required food for their child. Mid-morning snack will be provided.
  2. Bring your child to the daycare center before your first class period in order to be in class on time. Only the child's parents are allowed in the daycare. Do not bring friends to the daycare.
  3. Bring everything that your child might need during the day such as diapers, prepared formula in bottles, baby food, juice, cereal, bibs, and at least one change of clothing. Label everything including disposable diapers in permanent ink with your child's full name.
  4. Go directly to class after leaving your child at the daycare center. Students are not permitted to return to the daycare between classes or during classes without the permission of Ms. Keith. If you are needed, you will be called from class.
  5. Inform Ms. Keith in advance if you must leave early or arrive late and explain why.
  6. Any student who has a child in the daycare center is expected to be in class while the child is being cared for. Parents who do not attend class while the child is in daycare will be suspended from school for three (3) days. Continued violations may result in the child being removed from the daycare program.
  7. No other students are allowed in the daycare area at any time unless they have the advance permission of Ms. Keith. This includes before and after school.
  8. Sign an "Authorization to Give Medicine at School" form with your child's teacher if you wish any medication administered to your child. If possible, administer it yourself.
  9. An updated record of immunizations must be presented upon enrollment. A copy of the updated records must be given to Ms. Keith as needed throughout the year. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the program until immunization records can be updated. A child must be six weeks old to be considered eligible for the program.
  10. Any child sent home with an illness such as fever (100.6 o F. or 99.6 o F axillary), diarrhea, or vomiting must be free of such symptoms for at least 24 hours before returning. Children who exhibit these symptoms on a chronic basis will need a doctor's note stating that the child is well and free to return to the daycare center when requested by the director. This is for his welfare as well as the protection of the entire group.
  11. If you have a problem, concern, or question regarding the welfare of your child, discuss it first with the teacher in your child's room. If needed after that, see Ms. Keith. Communication is the key to success. Do not discuss your concerns with other students. That is gossip which is not permitted.
  12. If a child is absent from the daycare center for one week without notification from the parent, the child will be removed from the roll and placed on the waiting list. If you or your child is sick, call the daycare center and let them know the reason for the absence at (770) 521-7611 ext. 157 or Ms. Keith at (770) 521-7611 ext. 172. Also call Ms. Campbell, the Social Worker, at 770-521-6211
ext. 169 and let her know the reason so that it can be entered into the computer for all teachers.
  13. Every student who has a child in the daycare center is expected to treat the teachers there in a polite and respectful manner. Having your child in the daycare center here is a privilege.
  14. Each participant is expected to meet with Ms. Keith to discuss goals, graduation requirements, and her concerns. She needs to be shown each course completion in order to qualify for the incentives. A student must complete at least three courses in a semester to continue to participate in the program.
  15. Each participant is expected to attend the weekly Parent Support Group meetings as a means of improving parenting skills and becoming the best parent possible.
  16. Each participant is expected to pay the minimum fee of $20 to Ms. Keith if their child's care is not covered by DFACS. Payment is due on each Monday beginning on August 11 th . This will start on the first week of school. . Anyone who has not paid by Tuesday, August 25 th will not be allowed to participate.
  17. A teen parent with a child in the daycare center must be taking a full 4-class load unless she is a senior with no more classes to take. In addition, she must maintain 80% attendance in her classes or she will lose her daycare privileges.
  18. Students in Early Childhood Education classes will be doing lab work in the daycare center and will be working with your child.
  19. A student who is a new mother must wait six weeks before returning to classes after delivering a child. If she wants to return earlier, she must bring a note from the doctor permitting her to return to school and have permission from the administration.
  20. At any time a student may lose his/her privileges of using the daycare for reasons not stated above at the discretion of Ms. Keith and the principal.

I understand that failure to comply with any part of this agreement may result in loss of services to me and my child.
