The Media Center at Independence High School provided the setting for the annual ceremony which celebrates the progress and graduation of the participants of the Parenting Education Program. Parents, teachers, friends, and guests from the community gathered to mark the accomplishments of the teen parents.
Mrs. Linda Schultz brought greetings from the FCBOE and shared advice to the teen parents. Mr. Bob Lynch, Area Superintendent, spoke to the graduates encouraging them as parents to continue on. Mrs. Gwendolyn Harris, Assistant Principal, and Kathryn Arter, Grant Team member, recognized the following donors for 2008-2009 who helped to make this year possible: Alpharetta Rotary, Roswell Rotary, Alpharetta Junior Women's Club, DFACS, First Book, Northside Hospital and Roswell Woman's Club. Donors were also recognized for the 2009-2010 school year: Alpharetta Junior Women's Club, Northside Hospital , Roswell Woman's Club, and Roswell Rotary Club.
Ms. Bohannon, Counselor for the teen parents, introduced the scholarship donors. Sheila Edenfield represented Roswell First Baptist “In His Name” Sunday school class which gave a $300 scholarship to Brittany Lowe. Barb Lovatt of Roswell Woman's Club presented a $750 scholarship for Juan Zapata.
Mrs. Taylor, Principal of Independence High School, read the inspiring story of Charles Schultz who had appeared to be a failure in school but became an enormous success in life. She also showed a video that she had prepared highlighting the activities and graduates of the past year.
Mrs. Dolores Shamis, Toddler Room Assistant, and Ms. Deandra Burke, Infant Room Assistant, helped to honor the participants and graduates with a rose, gift bag, and book bag monogrammed by Mrs. Shamis for the babies.
The teen parent graduates for this year included Brittany Arnold, Ashley Goodwin, Cristal Guadalupe, Rob Kirton, Brittany Lowe, Alex Norman, Emideline Saint Paul, Daisy Remigio, Cierra Smith , Jordan Tilley, Kimberly Villasenor, Samantha Williams, Juan Zapata, Ambria Zeitner. Participants in the program were also recognized. They include Zaira Cruz, Sheronda Douglas, Ivory McClure, Mayra Quintana, Cody Snell, and Lily Zapata.
Volunteers from the Donna Pugliese Bible Study group along with Ms. Connie Michel and Nancy Wright helped in the preparation of the food and flowers for the event.
