The Haynes Bridge
Middle School Guidance and Counseling Department plays an important role
in the development of the middle school student. The guidance and counseling
services listed below are provided to assist students with their personal
and academic needs.
CAREER DAY
The annual school-wide career day provides students the opportunity to
explore future careers. Each student chooses 4 options from more than
40 careers represented.
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE
Counselors assist teachers on an as-needed basis in promoting healthy
student development through a variety of classroom guidance lessons. Example
topics are study skills, decision making, peer pressure, test-taking skills,
conflict resolution and academic planning.
CRISIS INTERVENTION
The counseling staff is ready to implement the crisis intervention plan
when needed. Services include counseling, media communications and outside
referrals.
GROUP COUNSELING
Small group counseling sessions are provided according to need. Family
transition, making friends, anger management and dealing with grief are
examples of group topics.

INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCES
Counselors conference with individual students when referred by teachers,
administrators, parents or self-referral. Students sign-up in the counseling
office notebook and are sent appointment passes by the counselors.
PARENT CONFERENCES
As mentioned above, the counselors are available by appointment to conference
with parents concerning their student. The conference may be individual,
include the student, or involve the teachers.
PEER DIVERSITY
Counselors work with administrators, teachers and students to teach tolerance
and respect for individual differences.
PROFESSIONAL RESOURCE CENTER
The counselors have resource information regarding the school social worker,
psychological resource personnel, private tutors, homebound instruction,
summer programs and workshops. Books and videos are available to parents
and teachers on specific topics of concern.
SCHOOL TRANSITION
Elementary to middle school and middle to high school transition activities
give parents and students the opportunity to become acquainted with the
new school environments. Students gain knowledge through school visitations
and presentations. From welcoming rising 6th grade students to saying
"good-bye" to the 8th grade students as they move to high school,
these activities help promote success at the next level.
STANDARDIZED TESTING
Counselors coordinate the standardized testing program and interpretation
of the results. The statewide testing program includes the Eighth Grade
Writing Assessment, the Stanford 9 for 8th grade and the Criterion Referenced
Competency Test for grades 6, 7 and 8.
