STEP Stepping has collegiate roots dating from the 1900’s, but this form of entertainment has become very popular among youngsters from middle and high schools. It has been featured in movies such as Drumline (2002) and Stomp the Yard (2007), and a step team from Howard University performed at President Clinton’s Inauguration. Elements of stepping come from gymnastics, tap dancing and certain kinds of ethnic dance. It is a collection of rhythms made by using the hands and feet, and occasionally props, such as canes. Responding to chants or calls, a team stomps their feet and/or claps their hands to a base beat while moving into synchronized formations. The entire body becomes a musical instrument. Tennis shoes/sneakers are a must; props, attire and music will be screened. Our Step Team members enjoy physical and often aerobic workout while building their self-confidence as they prepare to perform in front of their peers. We require members to maintain satisfactory conduct throughout the school year. |
