Directed Study
Course offerings generally permit students to complete one of the following:
- A semester-long program of study developed by the student, in collaboration with the facilitating TAG teacher.
- An online course offered through Georgia Virtual School*
- An Advanced Placement course offered at Alpharetta High School that does not fit into the student’s schedule (this option requires the consent of the AP teacher)
Directed Studies courses are semester-long academic electives. Students must complete a Directed Studies application and receive signed approval from one of the TAG teachers prior to registration. Students interested in enrolling in a Directed Studies course should familiarize themselves with the program expectations as addressed in the manual. Directed Studies students complete a contract during the first week of the semester, tying course objectives to the TAG standards.
Georgia Virtual School
Virtual school is a form of distance learning; teacher and students are separated by geographical distance and the coursework is completed by computer. Up to 78 unique core curriculum courses, AP, and elective courses are offered in both block and semester formats. Georgia Virtual School’s instructors are all highly qualified teachers, specially trained to teach in the online learning environment.
Students take online courses to increase their content choices, relieve scheduling conflicts, or get ahead in their course work. The online course becomes part of the student’s daily class schedule, and students report to the TAG office during that period. To see if you are a good candidate for on-line learning, take the following Self Assessment Inventory.
Students can register to take up to 1 Carnegie unit during their regular school day schedule. Registration is a two part process: students can register by accessing the GA Virtual School web site. All applications must be screened and approved by students' counselors.
