earlyrelease
As a reminder, the first of five systemwide Early Release Days arrives Wednesday on September 19. An Early Release Day allows students to be dismissed three hours early so that teachers and staff can spend the rest of the day in professional development workshops.

The initiative gives staff the opportunity to receive needed training throughout the school year rather than waiting until the summer months. Early Release Days were piloted among 13 schools last year and the initiative was so successful that it was expanded systemwide in 2007-08.

Four additional Early Release Days remain for the 2007-08 school year: October 24, November 28, February 27, and March 26.

residency affidavit
New requirements often cause confusion, and even a little frustration, and the Affidavit of Residency is no exception. In August, the school system began a new procedure to verify students' legal enrollment status in a Fulton school.

The purpose of the Affidavit is to make sure that only students who reside in Fulton County attend our schools. This means that your tax money stays in Fulton County to pay for the education of those who live here -- instead of students from other counties who attend under false pretenses.

As the Georgia curriculum changes, parents will want to stay up-to-date with how it affects what their children are learning in Fulton classrooms. This year, changes are being seen in science, social studies, and math. Q&A sheets were provided to parents in August to address the changes.

Next year, even more changes will occur as the new math curriculum standards are expanded to high school. Parents can learn more about the new math curriculum at seven forums during October.

SAT
Data released last month by The College Board shows that Fulton County is again a state leader in SAT scores. While the state and nation have shown slight declines this year, Fulton has shown a nine- point increase. It also beat the state average by 117 points and the national average by 78 points.

In addition, more than half of Fulton County's high schools are among the Top 25 scoring schools in the state, the most of any school system in Georgia.
The signs of school construction are everywhere in Fulton County -- from the school additions completed this summer at Woodland Elementary, High Point Elementary and Roswell High School, to the sights of earth-moving equipment at the Lake Forrest elementary school site in Sandy Springs, Westlake High School (pictured left) and South Fulton high school sites, to the community meetings planned to discuss new school openings.

This year will prove to be one of the busiest ever in school construction, thanks to funding from the recently passed SPLOST III in March.

FCSTV screen
Want to keep up with School Board activities without ever leaving your home? Fulton County Schools stakeholders can watch the school system's cable channel, FCSTV, through the school system web site.

Last spring, the Fulton County School System began videostreaming School Board meetings. The popularity of being able to watch school system events from the comfort of a home computer quickly caught on, compelling the Broadcast and Video Technology Department to expand FCSTV cable programming to the internet.
