Japanese students from Elkins Pointe MS travel to Japan in a matter of seconds!
Ms. Miyuki Johnson and her Japanese world language students at Elkins Pointe Middle School traveled across the Pacific Ocean at 5:20pm on December 11th, without ever having to leave their classroom. (more pictures) With the technical support of Ms. Anne Sexton, the students participated in a live, long-distance video conference with pen-pal students in Hikarigaoka Junior High School in Japan using Skype. Elkins Pointe students could hardly believe their eyes when their pen-pals stood in front of the remote camera for the first time. The Japanese students were dressed in their school uniforms and were busy preparing for class (the time in Japan was 7:20am, a fourteen hour difference). With excitement and laughter, along with some occasional confusion due to language difficulties, the students discussed a variety of topics including holiday plans, the Japanese New Year, and, of course, Japanese manga (cartoons). Throughout this exchange, students were able to recognize how technology serves to connect different cultures together. Students also learned that successful communication requires a working knowledge of the language and culture as well. These factors were immediately noticeable by their eager smiles and conversations after the conference had concluded, “I need to study harder so that next time I can communicate better!”
