New Year, Same Healthy School Meals!

With calorie limits, less than 10% of calories from saturated fat, zero grams of trans fat, and sodium limits, School Meals are healthier than ever before! School menus are carefully planned by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with input from our District Chef to make eating healthy easy and delicious!

What's for Breakfast?

Students who eat school breakfast have been shown, on average, to attend 1.5 more days of school per year and score 17.5% higher on standardized math tests. Daily Breakfast Menus are planned according to USDA guidelines and offer 4 food groups. Students select daily from:

  • Hot and cold entree options, always with a whole grain

  • Fresh fruit & 100% fruit juice

  • 4 milk choices: 1%, Skim, Skim Chocolate, Skim Strawberry

As part of USDA’s Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program, students from 15 Fulton County Elementary Schools are offered a free fresh fruit or vegetable snack 2-3 days a week! The program introduces students to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables! Each fresh fruit and vegetable is accompanied with a Fun Fact Sheet, and students are encouraged to use their senses to taste, smell, touch, and see the novel fruits and vegetables.

What have students tried?

  • Dino Egg Pluot
  • Cara Cara
  • Gold Kiwi
  • Rainbow Carrots
  • Figs
  • Satsuma
  • Tangelos
  • Gooseberries
  • Persimmons
  • White Nectarine
  • Jicama; and more!

Schools participating in the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program include Asa Hilliard, Bethune, Brookeview, College Park, Conley Hills, Hamilton E Holmes, Hapeville, Heritage, Lake Forest, Love T. Nolan, Mimosa, Parklane, Seaborn Lee, and S.L. Lewis Elementary.

Grow for it this Winter!

With the arrival of cooler weather, FCS School Nutrition got down in the dirt and planted new winter vegetables in the Administrative Center Wellness Garden. Swiss chard, kale, rosemary, cabbage and more were planted for the season. The Wellness Garden was installed in June, in order to provide tips and tricks to other FCS School Gardens.
