Show Your Spirit with National School Lunch Week

Schools across the district celebrated National School Lunch Week in October. Festivities throughout the week included celebrity servers, contests, and prize giveaways. Cafes also featured new menu items and hosted a Try-It Tuesday that provided a free Spinach & Apple Salad sample to students.

National School Lunch Week was created to celebrate the National School Lunch Program, which requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole-grain rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium.

Fulton County School Nutrition Program receives 2016 Golden Radish Award GOLD level Recognition by Georgia Department of Agriculture

Fulton County Schools was recognized with the Golden Radish Award at the Gold level for accomplishments during the 2015-2016 school year, which included:

  • Each month, the School Nutrition Program worked with Royal Food Service to source at least one locally grown item to feature in all 93 schools’ cafeterias.
  • 108 taste tests were conducted, including a Georgia Grown steamed cabbage recipe and sweet potatoes from a school garden.
  • 40 school gardens are located throughout the district including raised beds, greenhouses, orchards, and potted herbs.

The prestigious Golden Radish Award, awarded at Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Honorary Levels, acknowledges the outstanding leadership of school representatives working to establish comprehensive farm-to-school programs including local food procurement, hosting taste tests, and gardening with students. FCS Nutrition Program began participating in the Farm to School initiative in 2011, and this is the 4th consecutive year the program is recognized by the Golden Radish Award.
