Recent studies show students who eat balanced meals perform better on tests. While eating properly on test day can help the brain function and focus, it’s important to nourish the body and brain every day! Although no single food will make or break a child’s test results, check out the tips below to help eat smart:
1. Eat Breakfast –a solid breakfast helps prevent the distractions of hunger pains or fatigue during the test. Save time at home and fuel up the brain with a School Breakfast including a whole grain entrée with lowfat milk and fresh fruit. The school cafeteria conveniently provides balanced hot and cold breakfast entrees with fruit and milk every morning before the school day!
2. Hydrate – low hydration status can result in unnecessary fatigue. Drink plenty of fluids before the exam, and throughout the day of day-long exams.
3. Eat Snack & Meals– eating small nutritious snacks and meals throughout the day helps avoid going longer than 4-5 hours without food, which can result in distracting hunger and fatigue. The school cafeteria provides balanced lunch choices every day!
While all schools in Fulton County serve School Breakfast, eleven schools, including nine elementary and two middle schools, are encouraging students to eat breakfast with a unique Grab & Go breakfast from the cafeteria or hallway kiosk to eat in the classroom before the start of the school day.
“When students come to school hungry, they are unable to concentrate and learn to their full potential,” said School Nutrition Executive Director, Alyssia Wright. “By increasing convenient and fun access to breakfast, such as Grab and Go Breakfast and Breakfast in the Classroom programs, students are more likely to eat a school breakfast and start the day ready to learn.”
At Mimosa Elementary, results from starting Breakfast in the Classroom showed an increase in daily breakfasts served from 412 before the program started to an average of 634 students eating school breakfast daily.
With these positive results seen across the district, more schools are encouraged to start offering Breakfast in the Classroom.
