October Newsletter

More than 32 million children eat school lunch everyday across the USA, and to celebrate the healthy lunch choices in Fulton County Schools, all cafeterias will celebrate National School Lunch Week: October 14-18, 2013.

The campaign puts a spotlight on the healthy foods and positive changes that Fulton CountySchools have incorporated into the menus.   The week leading up and during National School Lunch Week, the classroom with the highest lunch participation in each elementary school will win a classroom prize pack.  Middle and high school students will receive a raffle ticket each day they join the cafeteria for school lunch and earn a chance to win prizes.

Serving more than 7.5 million meals to Fulton County School children throughout the school year, the federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students.  The program, which has been serving the nation's children for over 60 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards by:

  • Ensuring students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week;
  • Substantially increasing offerings of whole grain-rich foods;
  • Offering only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties;
  • Limiting calories based on the age of children being served; and
  • Reducing amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.

“Fulton County School lunches are healthier than ever before with even more whole grains, more offerings of dark green, red and orange vegetables, serving only fat free or 1% milk, and zero trans fats” said Alyssia Wright, Executive Director of School Nutrition.  “We are also leading the way with better nutrition for all students at affordable prices in support of student achievement.”

Celebrate Farm to School Month  in October with Lettuce Try It!

Lettuce Try It is a state-wide effort to get kids across Georgia to eat (and fall in love with!) fresh, local lettuce during October Farm to School Month.  Each cafeteria will be serving up locally grown Hydro Bibb Lettuce at a lunch in October!

Why Lettuce?

  • Georgians eat more than 285 million pounds of lettuce a year, but right now we grow less than one-tenth of 1% of that.
  • If all the lettuce consumed by Georgians were produced and sold in the state, it would mean an additional $83.6 million of direct revenue for farmers.
  • There are lots of great varieties of lettuce that grow well in Georgia.  It’s also an easy crop for school gardens to plant in the fall and harvest before the winter break.
  • Lettuce has a longer shelf life if bought locally.

What is Hydro Bibb Lettuce?

Hydro Bibb Lettuce is specially grown using a farming technique called Hydroponics which uses water and mineral solutions to grow plants without soil!

Making meal payments to your student account has never been easier!  You can pre-pay for meals online at www.mypaymentsplus.com.  Also, in October there is a district-wide giveaway in which any Fulton County School parent using MyPaymentsPlus is eligible to receive $250 simply by making a payment to their student’s MyPaymentsPlus account.
