Back to School: Are you Ready? School Nutrition is!
Welcome back to school! The School Nutrition Program is ready to serve nutritious meals to all Fulton County students! Last school year, over 14.2 million meals were served, including breakfast and lunch meals. This school year, with improved breakfast standards and new menu choices we expect to feed even more students.
School Nutrition Managers and workers reported to work before school started to receive training, confirm food orders, fine tune equipment, and get the cafeterias and kitchens ready for the start of school!
Eating school meals has never been healthier! With new breakfast meal standards effective this school year, you may notice even more whole grain choices offered at breakfast. A few great breakfast items you will see on the menus this year include biscuits, waffles, pancakes, french toast, assorted cereals and cereal bars – all made from whole grains! You will also have the choice of daily fresh fruit, 100% fruit juices and fat free and 1% milks. Even better is that a complete breakfast meal with an entrée, fruit and milk will only cost students $1.05 at elementary schools and $1.20 at middle and high schools!
With the help of student feedback, lunch menus also continue to deliver delicious and nutritious options, with even more student-favorites, whole grain choices and fresh fruits and vegetables! A great aspect of Fulton County menus is that there are so many choices. Each day students choose from a variety of entrees, including fresh made deli sandwiches and/or salads, in addition to four different fruit and vegetable choices, including a daily fresh fruit! Fat free and 1% milk choices help complete the meal! Complete lunch meals only cost students $2.20 at elementary schools and $2.45 at middle and high schools.

Why the Focus on More Whole Grains?
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend at least three servings of whole grain foods daily (48 grams of whole grain). Whole grain means just that – it’s the complete grain. The health benefits of whole grain come from all three parts of the whole grain – the bran, the germ and the endosperm. Scientific evidence supporting the health benefits of whole grain continues to grow.
Research shows strong and consistent support that regular consumption of whole grain provides significant health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes, while also supporting weight management.
The most recent regulations of school meals requires that half of the grains offered at breakfast and lunch must be whole grains in school year 2013-2014, and all offered grains will have to be whole grain beginning school year 2014-2015. Fulton County School menus, both breakfast and lunch, are already exceeding this year’s requirement, with more than half of the grains on the menu as whole grain offerings!
