Schools Celebrate National School Breakfast Week!

Students who eat school breakfast perform better in the classroom. Nationwide statistics, however, show that fewer than half of the children who receive lunch at school also receive breakfast.   To increase participation, Fulton County schools celebrated National School Breakfast Week during March 4th-8th. All cafeterias hosted contests under the 2013 theme, “Be a Star with School Breakfast,” which highlights how eating a balanced breakfast at school can help students shine like their favorite stars in the movies, on the field, and on TV.

Although National School Breakfast Week is observed for just one week, nutritious eating is celebrated yearlong and every school day. The district’s school breakfast program offers students the healthy foods they need to get set for a busy school day, says Alyssia Wright, executive director of the district’s School Nutrition department.  “Students have the choice of a hot or cold nutritious breakfast entree paired with a choice of fresh fruit or 100% fruit juice and a choice of skim or low-fat milks,” Wright says. “Every school breakfast served meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat and portion size.”


Also, at just $1.05 for elementary schools and $1.20 for middle and high schools, healthy school breakfasts are affordable and can be a lifesaver for busy parents.  “It’s a race for any family to get their kids ready, fed and out the door in time for school,” Wright says. “Knowing that their children can eat a healthy breakfast at school can be a huge relief for parents.”

On Monday March 5th, the Fulton County School Nutrition Program was one of 25 districts recognized with the Golden Radish Award by State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and Georgia Organics Board President Rashid Nuri for taking the “5 Million Meals Challenge” which pledges to offer more local foods in school meals.  The School Nutrition Program has participated in the Farm to School Initiative since 2011, featuring locally and regionally grown fresh produce in all schools each month.
