February is American Heart Month

For a healthy heart, keeping saturated fat and sodium to a minimum and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables is important.  Encourage your child to keep a healthy heart at school by choosing school meals.  Every school meal follows saturated fat, trans fat and sodium restrictions, and ensures each child has a fruit or vegetable!

Georgia Grown Cabbage

Fulton students enjoyed farm fresh cabbage from Georgia farmers! The cabbage was grown and harvested in Norman Park, Georgia.  Grown nearby, the cabbage was at it's peak freshness and an excellent source of vitamins K and C, and a very good source of dietary fiber, manganese and folate!  The fresh cabbage was chopped, seasoned and steamed following a chef-inspired recipe!

School Meals Offer Daily Fresh Fruit

Assorted fresh fruit is offered daily at both school breakfast and school lunch meals!  Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals that help students feel healthy and energized for a day of learning!  Fruit also provides fiber that helps fill you up and keeps your digestive system happy!  Eating plenty of fruits may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.

As part of a healthy school lunch, Elementary and Middle School students can pick up one fruit side, and High School students can choose up to two fruit sides.  Additional fruit servings are available for $0.50 each!

USDA Under Secretary Visits Lake Forest Elementary

USDA's Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, Kevin Concannon, joined Lake Forest Elementary students for school lunch followed by a roundtable discussion with parents, district staff and community partners.  The visit provided an opportunity to see how local students strive toward a healthier generation with nutritious, balanced school meals and snacks.
