November 2013 School Nutrition Newsletter
Evidence continues to mount that healthy kids are better learners. Two recently released reports The Learning Connection:What You Need to Know to Ensure Your Kids Are Healthy and Ready to Learn and The Wellness Impact: Enhancing Academic Success Through Healthy School Environments Report show that regular access to better nutrition, starting with breakfast,  and physical activity can positively impact a child's academic success.

Key Findings Include:

  1. Only 38% of all teens eat breakfast every day.
  2. Students who eat breakfast have better attention and memory.
  3. Only 25% of high school students are active for the recommended 60 minutes each day.
  4. After just 20 minutes of physical activity, brain activity improves.

Fulton County School Nutrition encourages kids to eat right with School Breakfast each morning!  School Breakfast menus offer hot and cold breakfast entrees that include 100% of grains that are whole-grain rich, lean proteins, daily fresh fruit, 100% fruit juice, and low-fat and skim milk choices!

For a complete breakfast for only $1.05 at Elementary and $1.20 at Middle and High Schools, students can select a breakfast entrée with fruit choice and/or milk choice!  All breakfast meals are available for free or reduced prices for students who qualify.

Fulton County School Nutrition Program has partnered with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Strong4Life movement to deliver fun, simple solutions that inspire today’s kids and families to develop lifelong healthy habits, one positive step at a time. In school year 2012, all School Nutrition Managers were trained to be better equipped to encourage children to make healthy food choices in the cafeteria.  In addition, the Strong4Life Challenge, a school-based program, was offered at 19 elementary schools in school year 2012, and 10 more this school year.  Check out the 4 Healthy Habits that we can all follow:
