38 Fulton County Elementary Schools Receive HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Award

Schools play an important role in helping to reduce childhood obesity. Kids who have healthy eating patterns and get regular physical activity are also more likely to perform better academically. That is why the USDA offers the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) to support the over 100,000 schools that participate in school meals programs in their efforts to promote nutritious food choices and physical activity. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Award has been awarded to 38 Fulton County Elementary Schools.

The USDA commends these schools for the exemplary steps, leadership and team work employed to make changes to their schools’ nutrition environment; improve the quality of the foods served; provide students with more nutritious, healthy choices; and, enhance their physical activity program.  To acknowledge their achievement, the schools will receive an award plaque, a banner to display, and a small monetary incentive award for meeting HUSSC criteria.  Also, the names of these schools will be proudly added to the HUSSC awardees list on the Team Nutrition HUSSC website.

The 38 Fulton County schools awarded USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze include: Abbotts Hill Elementary, Alpharetta Elementary, Asa G. Hilliard Elementary, Barnwell Elementary, Bethune Elementary, Birmingham Falls Elementary, Brookview Elementary, Campbell Elementary, Cliftondale Elementary, Conley Hills Elementary, Crabapple Crossing Elementary, Creek View Elementary, Dolvin Elementary, Esther Jackson Elementary, Findley Oaks Elementary, CH Gullatt Elementary, Hapeville Elementary, Heards Ferry Elementary, Hillside Elementary, Ison Springs Elementary, Lake Forest Elementary, Lake Windward Elementary, Manning Oaks Elementary, Medlock Bridge Elementary, Mimosa Elementary, Mountain Park Elementary, New Prospect Elementary, Northwood Elementary, Oakley Elementary, Palmetto Elementary, Parklane Elementary, Renaissance Elementary, Shakerag Elementary, Spalding Drive Charter, State Bridge Crossing Elementary, Summit Hill Elementary, Sweet Apple Elementary, and Wilson Creek Elementary.

FCS Cafes Celebrated National School Breakfast Week

Schools across the district celebrated National School Breakfast Week in March. Festivities throughout the week included celebrity servers, contests, and prize giveaways. Cafes also hosted a Try-It Tuesday offering free Breakfast Smoothie samples.

With testing right around the corner, it is important that students are fueled up and ready to focus during testing time! Did you know that eating a school breakfast helps prepare the brain for a day of learning and activity, while eating school lunch keeps the brain going?

Every day at school the cafe works hard to provide students with nutritious and delicious hot and cold breakfast and lunch entrée choices with the choice of fresh fruits and vegetables and a choice of milk. All students can eat delicious and nutritious school meals to get powered up for an awesome day of success!

For more information about healthy menus and online options to prepay for meals visit www.fcsnutrition.com

It is a federal requirement that all districts that participate in the National School Lunch Program have a Wellness Policy. The District Wellness Council, comprised of stakeholders representing School Nutrition, Student Health Services, Physical Education, Athletics, Communications, and parents, reviews the Wellness Policy. View the Wellness Policy at www.fcsnutrition.com and provide input to schoolnutrition@fultonschools.org
