Red Cross Responding to Disaster Needs for Dozens after EF2 Tornado
ATLANTA, March 21, 2018 – Red Cross teams are helping dozens impacted throughout the Chestnut Ridge neighborhood again today, continuing to meet one-on-one with families after an EF2 tornado wreaked havoc along Jumpers Trail in South Fulton County late Monday night. Today, two roaming Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles are traveling through the community providing water, snacks and bulk supplies as clean-up begins. As some families wait for utilities to be restored, others are meeting with caseworkers to receive financial assistance and identify next steps. Tonight, the Red Cross will continue to support a local church-run shelter at The Kingdom of God International Ministries, 4590 Welcome All Road, College Park, GA 30349.
Highlights: Red Cross Disaster Assistance – Severe Weather Response (March 19-21, 2018)
  • Served 250 meals
  • Provided 1,130 snacks
  • Assisted 23 families (103 people) with casework assistance
“We can see the sun and sky from inside the living room.” said Yolanda Vann as she walked around her home on Caspian Drive. “We’re still looking for the trashcan.” Yolanda’s husband, two daughters, and granddaughter all rode out the storm Monday night as “every window either cracked or busted out.” She like many other families are working with Red Cross caseworkers to identify next steps of their recovery plan after an FE2 tornado ripped through her subdivision in South Fulton County, Georgia.
Disaster Program Manager Blythe Argenbright offers comfort kits containing emergency hygiene essentials like soap, toothpaste, and washcloths to a resident of the Chestnut Ridge neighborhood. Emergency response vehicles continue to make rounds throughout the community with water, snacks, blankets, gloves and flashlights.
Mom Diana Whitney comforts one-year old son Pharaoh under a Red Cross Blanket as the two charge a cell phone at the community clubhouse. “We have minor damage to our home, but we have no power”, Whitney said.  A strong EF 2 tornado hit the Chestnut Ridge subdivision late night Monday taking out the electricity to parts of the neighborhood. “Some say it sounded like a train, but I heard a pack of big bad wolfs and when the wind came it felt like they all tried to blow the house down.” Right now, Red Cross workers are helping families with emergency needs like charging devices, identifying resources, and providing critical information.
Your generous support of Red Cross disaster cycle services makes our mission possible, and we thank you for helping provide comfort and hope to people in their darkest hours.
All the best,
