Following District 6 Board Member Catherine Maddox's decision to retire effective May 15th, the Fulton County Board of Education invites community members to submit their candidacy for fulfilling the unexpired term.

Interested individuals should submit – between May 15 and May 30, 2017 by 5:00 p.m.– a letter of interest outlining their qualifications and a resume to:

   Board Services Office

   Fulton County Schools

   6201 Powers Ferry Road

   Atlanta, GA 30339

Candidates must be age 18 or older, must reside within District 6 (see map) for at least one year/12 months, and be a Georgia resident.

According to O.C.G.A. § 20-2-51 and O.C.G.A. § 20-2-54.1, the requirements for candidates interested in filling the Board vacancy are as follows:

Residency restrictions:

-- Must be a resident of District 6 (Ms. Maddox's district)

Employment/service restrictions:

-- Must not serve on the governing body of a private elementary or secondary educational institution;

-- Must not be employed by the Board of Education;

-- Must not be employed by the Department of Education;

-- Must not serve as a member of the State Board of Education.

Relationship restrictions:

-- Must not have an immediate family member on the Board of Education;

-- Must not have an immediate family member serving in District as Superintendent, principal, assistant principal, or system administrative staff.

-- "Immediate family member" means a spouse, child, sibling, or parent or the spouse of a child, sibling, or parent whose employment began on or after January 1, 2010.

Status restrictions:

-- Must not be listed on the National Sex Offender Registry;

-- Must not be listed on the state sexual offender registry.

Ethics restrictions:

-- Must read and understand the code of ethics and conflict of interest provisions applicable to the Board of Education;

-- Must agree to disclose compliance with the State Board of Education's policy on training for Board members, the code of ethics for the Board, and the conflict of interests provisions applicable to the Board.

In addition, Georgia law declares a person ineligible to hold the office of school board member if he/she is:

-- The holder of another county office.

-- A holder or receiver of public money that has refused to, or failed to, account for it or pay it over when asked.

-- A convicted felon who has not been pardoned and is not the subject of a restoration of rights.

-- Of unsound mind or unable to discharge the duties of the office because of advanced age or bodily infirmity.

-- A publisher of schoolbooks, an agent of schoolbook publishers, or someone with financial interest in the sale of schoolbooks.

The School Board will interview potential candidates and make a selection so that the individual can fulfill the remaining time of Maddox's term, which ends December 31, 2018. Fulfilling the term, however, does not guarantee the candidate a future seat on the school board as they must still qualify with the Secretary of State's office and run for election.
