| Alternative School Programs
- Crossroads The Fulton County School District has established several
Alternative School Programs. The Crossroads/Second Chance Alternative Middle and
High School Program within the school district enables disruptive students to
be reassigned to an alternative setting rather than suspending or expelling such
students from school. The High School Open Campus Alternative Program are for
students who are eligible to attend a regular classroom program but are more likely
to succeed in a nontraditional setting. In addition, several of the middle schools
have created an In-School Alternative Program for student whose behavior necessitates
intervention at the local school. It is the policy of the state of Georgia
and the Fulton County Schools that Alternative Education Programs provide learning
environments that include the established academic curriculum of English/language
arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and self-discipline. Students receive
support through supervision and counseling services. All information about
the various In-School Alternative Programs can be found by contacting the school
administrators at the local schools, since the programs vary by location. The
Open Campus program is open for students who wish to apply to enroll. Courses
are taught by teachers and through the use of independent studies packets. Generally,
students may work at a speed with which they are comfortable; moving at a faster
or slower pace as is needed. Work-Study programs are also available. Questions
about the Open Campus programs can be answered by the counselors at each site. The
Crossroads/Second Chance program provides for the education and behavioral needs
of students who have been adjudicated, have been removed from the regular school
program due to disruptive or violent behavior, who are returning from placement
in a Department of Justice Juvenile Facility, or who have moved to Fulton County
after a Disciplinary or Tribunal Hearing in another school district. Students
who attend the Crossroads/Second Chance Program will have a smaller number of
students in each class, and additional counseling and self-discipline sessions
are provided. The instruction in this alternative program shall enable students
to return to a traditional education program as quickly as possible. All Crossroads/Second
Chance placements must be processed through the Office of Student Discipline. Two
campuses house the Fulton County Schools' out-of-school alternative programs.
