Fulton County School System In-Service Requirements
Since 1945 the Fulton County Board of Education has implemented a policy of in-service
requirements for management and instructional personnel. These are
designed to facilitate growth and improve instruction. Making sure
that your in-service credits are kept current is your responsibility.
Report outside credit by sending your grade card or transcript to
Staff Development.
There are three general in-service requirements
- All certificated personnel must earn a minimum of six semester or 10 quarter
hours credit during each 5-year period of employment. Credit can be earned by
taking graduate level courses, approved staff development (SDU) courses, or approved
equivalency activities (those hours earned for inservice that do not carry college
or staff development credit).
- All management and certified personnel must complete three semester or five
quarter hours of college level or SDU training designed to improve
their effectiveness and efficiency in the use of computers in their
areas of responsibility. You must complete this training before the
end of your third year of employment. Staff Development provides
computer training for employees through the Staff Development Center
and the local schools.
- All teachers must take the 2-SDU course, Reading Strategies, within three
years of employment. Veteran teachers have until 2004.
Additional inservice requirements
for middle school teachers
- Interdisciplinary teachers who do not have
middle school certification must complete five
hours annually toward middle school certification.
- Special area teachers (special education, art, physical education, industrial
arts, foreign languages, family resource management, etc.) and media specialists
must complete a course in Nature and Curriculum Needs of the Middle Grades Learner
within one year of employment.
