Parent involvement has been a vital component of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) since it became law in 1965, but the term itself had not been clearly defined. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) provides the following definition for parental involvement:
The participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student
academic learning and other school activities including and ensuring that: (a) Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning (b) Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school (c) Parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, when appropriate, in decision making as well as being a part of the advisory committees to assist in the education of their child. One of our objectives in Title I is to increase parental involvement. This goal is partially accomplished by implementing workshops and meetings to ensure consistency of information across all Title I Schools as
well as providing resources and materials for parents of Title I students.
