Basic Facts:

Fulton County Schools Mathematics Curriculum has been expanded to provide a systematic, on-going acquisition of basic facts by carrying out timed tests for students.  As indicated by the revised curriculum these timed tests may be oral or written to insure that what is being tested is the child’s ability to recall versus their motor skills in recording answers.  The timed tests should be brief assessments that increase in difficulty over time and diagnostic in nature.  Rather than awarding grades for these tests, teachers graph individual student’s progress on these assessments. Websites that may prove helpful in generating timed tests are as follows:

www.ricksmath.com; www.math.about.com; www.aaamath.com; www.yahooligans.com

For additional websites go to www.google.com and search for basic math facts.

Note: Parents and teachers should be aware that children should not be held back from learning other mathematics because they do not know their basic facts or are not yet proficient with computation.  Teachers and parents should provide on-going support while working on basic facts and computation while instruction in other mathematics topics takes place.
