CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Georgia Performance Standards (GPS), adopted by the Georgia Department of Education, provide the base for the curriculum taught in Fulton’s core and elective subjects.  The state’s curriculum is standards-based and has been evaluated by several national organizations and recognized for its rigor and relevance.  However, Fulton County has gone above and beyond to provide a curriculum that best meets the needs of our students.  For example, while the state has adopted an integrated approach to mathematics, Fulton has responded to our community by providing a blended math model that incorporates the best of both traditional and integrated math.  In math and all other subject areas, the curricula are inclusive of scope, sequence, pacing charts and model lessons.

All teachers are expected to teach the Fulton County curriculum.  Assistance will be provided to you through your Curriculum Support Teacher (elementary level), Curriculum Assistant Principal (secondary level), department chair, assigned mentor, system web sites and, most importantly, the curriculum content coordinator.  Training and professional development is provided on Early Release Days and during Summer Institutes.

Continuous Achievement

In order to support and reach the Fulton vision of each child learning to his or her fullest potential, the school system has long embraced a framework for advancement called Continuous Achievement.  This framework allows each child to progress in language arts and math at his or her optimum pace and depth, expanding and compacting the curriculum as appropriate. While no child is placed below his/her current grade level, there are no artificial barriers to moving ahead.  Each level has a clearly defined scope and sequence available for parent review. To facilitate optimum instructional time, classes are grouped with no more than two consecutive levels

The Continuous Achievement philosophy is an expectation in Fulton that all elementary and middle school math and language arts teachers must support.

The Curriculum Department web site provides information copies of curriculum handbooks, learning objectives, parent and teacher resources and textbook information.
