With the new season approaching, this is the Spring 2009 edition of Connections, Fulton County Schools' online newsletter for parents. Published quarterly, it contains information on new programs, important dates, system news and much more.

State testing begins in April
 Throughout the year, Fulton students participate in standardized testing as part of the statewide testing program.
Spring, however, is an especially important testing season due to the CRCT for elementary and middle school students and GHSGT for high-schoolers.

Spring kindergarten, pre-k registration dates set
Registration for incoming kindergarten students is May 6-7 at all elementary schools. During these two days, parents of these students, as well as other new elementary students entering school in August, can register their children for the 2009-10 school year. In addition, nearly 1,600 spaces in pre-kindergarten classes are available at 40 elementary schools throughout the county.

Fulton's schools stand out from the pack
The Fulton County School System is home to many of the highest-performing schools in the state and nation. Although awards and recognitions are received continuously throughout the year, we want to call attention to some of the most recent accolades our schools and school system achieved.

Early Release Day is March 25
The final early release day for the 2008-09 school year is Wednesday, March 25.
On this day, all schools will dismiss students approximately three hours earlier from their regular dismissal time so that staff can receive professional development opportunities.

Deadline for high school transfers drawing near
Friday, March 13, 2009, is the application deadline for parents of high school students desiring a transfer to another Fulton high school through the hardship process.
In addition, the school system is piloting an open enrollment pilot that allows students to transfer to another high school with available space. The deadline is also March 13.

System launches new
Fulton Institute of Technology
 The Fulton County School System is launching a new initiative next year aimed at integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Opening in August at two locations, the Fulton Institute of Technology -- or F.I.T. -- is a technical high school program that fuses practical and virtual learning opportunities to create a technology-rich learning environment. The first program offered is the CISCO Networking Academy.

Attendance zones approved for new schools
In February, the school board approved attendance zones resulting from a new elementary school and classroom additions in North Fulton as well as a new elementary school and high school in South Fulton. The new schools open in August 2009.
In order to balance enrollments at existing schools and fill the space provided at the new schools and additions, existing attendance zones had to be modified. The new zones go into effect in August.

Annual golf tournament is April 27 at The Manor
 Is someone in your family a golf addict? The Fulton Education Foundation is gearing up for its annual "Fore" Kids Golf Classic fund raiser and invites parents and community members to show off their swings and putts.
The event will be held April 27 at The Manor Golf and Country Club in Alpharetta, with individual slots available for $300 and foursomes at $1,200. There also will be a silent auction and reception. Space is limited, so an RSVP is needed by March 31 to Darlene Trigg, the Foundation's executive director, at 404-763-6832 or triggd@fultonschools.org.
Proceeds from the 2009 event will be used to fund vision testing, eyeglass acquisition, innovative technology teaching methods and teacher recognition.
