Overview
The Fulton County Board of Education is comprised of seven members elected to serve four-year terms. As the governing body of the Fulton County School System, the primary role of the board is the legislation of school system policies that are executed by the superintendent and staff. The superintendent serves as an ex-officio member of the board and acts as the secretary-treasurer. Board members elect a president for a two-year term and a vice president for a one-year term.

A member since 2000, Julia Bernath currently is the Board President. She represents Sandy Springs and portions of Alpharetta and Roswell.

Mrs. Bernath serves on the Fulton School Employees’ Pension Board and has represented the School Board on the Fulton Education Foundation’s Board of Directors. She is an active member of the Georgia School Boards Association, having served as treasurer, member of the Federal Relations Network and Government Operations committees, and as Fulton County Legislative Liaison.

At the state level, Mrs. Bernath has served on the Teacher Quality Assessment Council of the P-16 Committee and the Governor’s Education Review Study and 65% Implementation committees. A former PTA President and Local School Advisory Committee Chair, she also served on the 1995 Sandy Springs Area Redistricting Task Force. She recently received the Jewish Federation of Atlanta’s Women of Achievement Award and was elected to the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education’s Board of Directors.

Linda Bryant Board Vice President District 4 My Community Meetings
In 2004, Linda Bryant was re-elected to her fourth term on the Fulton County Board of Education. She represents areas in College Park, Fairburn, Palmetto, Union City, and southwest Atlanta. Mrs. Bryant currently serves as Board Vice President.

A member since 1993 and Board President from 2000-2002, Mrs. Bryant is a former teacher, PTA president, local school advisory committee chair and chair of the Superintendent's Advisory Committee. She is a past member of the Fulton Education Foundation Board and the Fulton County Employees' Pension Board. She has more than 20 years of experience with the Georgia probations/corrections department and holds a Bachelor's degree from Tuskegee University and a Master's degree in counseling from Georgia State University.

Linda Schultz District 1 My Community Meetings
Linda Schultz brings over 12 years of experience in educational policy and legislation to the Fulton County School Board. Her four-year term began in January 2005, representing areas in Alpharetta and Roswell. She served as Board Vice President from 2006-2007.

A past PTSA president for Roswell High School, Crabapple Middle School, and Mountain Park Elementary, Mrs. Schultz is formerly the legislative chair for the Georgia PTA and North Fulton Council of PTAs. She also has been a Local School Advisory Council member at Roswell High School and has sat on several school system committees. She serves on several Boards, including the Fulton Education Foundation Board, Fulton County Employee’s Pension Board, Leadership North Fulton, and STARHouse. She remains active in the Georgia PTA, and is a member of the Roswell Rotary Club. A native of Atlanta, Mrs. Schultz holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Georgia State University. She currently works as a website consultant.

A Board member since 1999, Katie Reeves represents the Alpharetta and Milton areas.

An active community member, she served on the Alpharetta Planning Commission for four years and was the School Board President from 2003-2005. Mrs. Reeves also has been a Local School Advisory Committee member and PTA Legislative Chair at Lake Windward Elementary School. A native of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Reeves majored in marketing at the University of Kentucky and worked for a number of years as an advertising account executive.

A member since July 2000, Gail Dean serves District 3, which represents Sandy Springs, Hapeville, and parts of East Point. She served as Board President from 2005 to 2007.

Ms. Dean's professional background includes serving as President of the Atlanta Homebuilders Association, Inner Atlanta Chapter, owning a real estate brokerage and two construction firms and consulting for financial institutions throughout the southeast. An active volunteer in Sandy Springs schools, she served on numerous reform and system-level committees, was PTA president and chaired the Local School Advisory and Sandy Springs legislative committees . She serves on the Board of Sandy Springs/North Fulton Clean and Beautiful, the Fulton County School Employees Charitable Fund, Fulton Education Foundation, Georgia Security Council, and Fulton Employees' Pension Board. She also represents her community on the Sandy Springs Council of Neighborhoods. She was appointed to the committee that reviews Special Charter Schools for the Georgia Board of Education. In addition, Mrs. Dean is Vice President of the Sandy Springs Tax Allocation District board and was appointed by Senator Tom Price to the Congressional Advisory Council Education Subcommittee.

Ashley Widener District 5 My Community Meetings
Ashley Widener was elected in November 2006 to a four-year term on the Fulton County School Board. She represents the Alpharetta and Johns Creek areas.

In addition to years of local school involvement and volunteerism, Widener brings strong experience in business and organizational management to her position on the School Board. She currently is vice president of Widener & Associates, Inc., an association management and governmental relations firm, and formerly has worked as an independent political consultant.

Widener holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia. She has worked with addicted teens, provided family counseling, and also has been the executive director of a Savannah homeless shelter providing social and educational support to single mothers.

Widener has been an active parent at State Bridge Crossing Elementary School, River Trail Middle School, Autrey Mill Middle School and Northview High School. She and her family are active members of the Peachtree Corners Baptist Church and the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Catherine Maddox District 6 My Community Meetings

Catherine Maddox joined the Fulton County Board of Education for a four-year term on January 1, 2007. She represents areas in East Point and College Park.

A former nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital, Catherine Maddox has been an advocate for Fulton County students and parents for many years. She has served as chair of the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and as legislative chair of the South Fulton Council of PTAs. She also has served on the Fulton County Curriculum Advisory Board and is a current member of the Fulton County Schools Discipline Review Committee and the United States Justice Department-Fulton Community School Advisory Committee.

An East Point resident for more than 25 years, Mrs. Maddox is a founding member of the Mayor’s Educational Task Force and a member of the city’s Youth Council Advisory Board, Ethics Board, and Historical Society. She has been active with the Boy Scouts of America, previously serving as membership chair, and has attended the New Horizons Church of God in Christ for more than 10 years. In 2002, the American Legion presented Mrs. Maddox with the Ella Pierson Shining Star Award for her community work. She also is a member of the National NAACP and attended Atlanta Technical College and Georgia Military College.

Cindy Loe, Ph.D. Superintendent

Cindy Loe, Ph.D., joined the Fulton County School System in April 2008 as superintendent of schools.

Before coming to Fulton County, Dr. Loe served as associate superintendent of teaching and learning for Gwinnett County Public Schools. Her responsibilities included supervising all district principals and schools, as well as curriculum, special education and continuous improvement. Under her direction, Gwinnett raised student achievement across multiple measures, including the highest scores on the Georgia CRCT, the SAT and the ACT, and facilitated the establishment of the district’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum.

Loe has been a teacher, assistant principal and middle school principal. With 26 years of public education experience, Loe has shared her expertise throughout the United States and internationally. Her first public school teaching assignments were in Fulton County at Mountain Park and Esther Jackson elementary schools and later at Holcomb Bridge Middle School. She has been a Fulton resident since 1991 and has two children who have graduated from Fulton County schools.

Loe received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Georgia State University. She received her master’s degree in middle grade and gifted education from Armstrong State College in Savannah and her Ph.D. in educational leadership from Georgia State University.
