ACTIONS TAKEN AT THE MAY 6, 2008, WORK SESSION

All school board members were present at the May 6, 2008, work session at the Fulton County School System’s Administrative Center. Board discussion and action items are posted on the BoardDocs web site.

 

 

WORK SESSION

 

Presentations. During the work session, the board heard presentations from four groups petitioning to become start-up charter schools –  Academy of Fulton County, Cornerstone Preparatory, Fulton Leadership Academy and Imagine Main Street Academy. Chief Financial Officer Theresa McDugald and Superintendent Loe presented information about the FY09 budget and a potential budget amendment to fund additional capital projects.

 

 

RECOGNITIONS

 

Georgia Science and Engineering Fair. Christopher Woolfolk from Paul D. West Middle School was recognized as a Georgia Science and Engineering Fair award winner. He is one of 17 Fulton students who won first place at the fair or received a special award.

 

Hospitality Education Foundation of Georgia Award. Culinary arts students from Tri-Cities High School won first place in the Hospitality Education Foundation of Georgia's annual competition. Due to their state win, the team was invited to participate in the ProStart national competition.

 

 

BOARD MATTERS

Reports. Board members congratulated staff on a successful “Fore Kids” golf tournament on April 28, the Fulton County Schools bus road-e-o on May 3 and Riverwood High School’s recent win in the state Geography Bowl. They also discussed the board’s accountability and fiscal responsibility in light of so many home foreclosures in Atlanta. Proposal ideas for the National School Boards Association’s 2009 conference were discussed.

 

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

Highlights. Dr. Loe declared May 5-9, 2008, as “Fulton County Schools Staff Appreciation Week.” The week already celebrates several national and local observances – Teacher Appreciation Week, School Nurses Day and the Fulton County School System’s annual bus road-e-o.

  

  

PUBLIC COMMENT

 

Six people addressed the board during the Public Comment part of the agenda:

 

·            Marcus Carter and Denise Perkins-Griffith – Tri-Cities High School magnet program

·            Cynthia Jordan and Kartara Gumbs – Students not being able to march with graduating class

·            Dan Sims and Susan Dorenkamp – budget

 

 

AGENDA ITEMS AND ACTIONS

 

Charter Amendments. The board approved charter amendments for Riverwood High School, which will now be submitted to the state Board of Education for approval.

 

Capital Projects. The board approved additional capital projects that are not currently funded in SPLOST. These include land for future schools in north and south Fulton; a new performing arts facility; acceleration of an elementary school from a 2010 to 2009 opening; and regulatory compliance issues. Projects will be funded over the next two years through the general fund budget.

 

Executive Session. The board met in closed executive session to discuss land, legal and/or personnel items. In open session, the board approved the extension of the system’s contract with Teach for America. The board also approved the personnel report, including the following changes:

·            Deborah Pernice, from assistant principal at Medlock Bridge Elementary School, to principal of Ocee Elementary School
