What IS Accelerated Reader?
AR, as we call it, is a reading incentive program based on the premise that the more students read, the better readers they will be. It is also important that students know how to choose that 'just right book' and that they read books on their appropriate reading level. Students in grades 2 - 5 begin the year using AR and students in grade 1 begin in January.
The books in the media center are labeled with an AR sticker that identifies we do own a quiz for that title. There is a label inside the front cover identifying the reading level and number of points a student can receive after they take the quiz.
Students may take quizzes only at school but they may refer to our list and if we own the quiz they can get the book from our library, the public library or their home book shelf!
Classroom teachers assign each student a reading level based on their knowledge of the student's ability. This program is not one size fits all! So even though a child may be in grade 3 they may be reading on a 5th, 2nd or 3rd grade level!
As students accumulate points for passing quizzes they are awarded an AR cap to wear on Fridays. They can add pins to add to the hat as they continue to move forward on their point goals.
When they achieve 100% of their goal the student is celebrated on the WRNE Morning News.
