Fulton County Schools are reason behind Atlanta's efficient energy use

Atlanta was named one of the nation's Top 10 major cities for efficient energy use, according to an announcement made this month by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Fulton County Schools was the major reason for Atlanta's prominence. One-quarter of Atlanta's 2008 Energy Star buildings named in the report are public schools, including 23 in Fulton County.

Deadline for high school transfers drawing near

Friday, March 13, 2009, is the application deadline for employees and other parents who desire to transfer their high school student to another Fulton high school through the hardship process.

In addition, the school system is implementing an open enrollment pilot that allows students to transfer to another high school with available space. The deadline is also March 13.

Budget meetings kick off March 10 and March 19

Although the budget season isn't really a season at all -- it occurs year-round -- the school system begins focusing on the new budget year in the spring beginning with two workshops in March.

The school board will be looking at as many scenarios as possible to keep the budget balanced. Employees are encouraged to stay involved in the process by receiving information through their principal or department leader or by attending school board meetings. The meetings also can be watched online. Video of the meetings is usually posted to the videostreaming site within 48 hours of the meeting.

Beware of email phishing

Even with strong filters and firewalls, our school system email network still falls victim to spam messages.

Employees may have recently received an influx of emails that claim their mailbox has exceeded its storage limit or messages claiming to be from the Fulton Teachers' Credit Union or other banks. Both request passwords and logins to access employee information.

Disregard these messages. The Fulton County School System does not use emails to notify of a full mailbox, nor does the Fulton Teachers' Credit Union send emails that request personal information, such as passwords.

Online Learning Center offers free technical training

Through a partnership with Dell Computers, the Information Technology Department offers free, video-based online training for many of the common software programs employees use every day.

Just use your FCSS login ID and password to check out course offerings and to register. For more information about online learning opportunities, email ITtraining@fultonschools.org.

Eight high schools named "AP Honor Schools"

This easy-to-use tool is available to all Fulton County schools and departments.

Department directory revamped on FCSS web site

The department directory on the school system's web site became outdated as older business programs were retired due to the integration of the new SAP business system. The directory relied on those systems to keep its information current.

It will still be months before SAP is fully integrated with the web site, so in the interim the department directory has been manually updated. Employees can find department leaders, phone numbers and web sites on this temporary web site.

In addition, four departments/organizations have recently launched new or revised web sites:

System launches new
Fulton Institute of Technology

The Fulton County School System is launching a new initiative next year aimed at integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Opening in August at two locations, the Fulton Institute of Technology -- or F.I.T. -- is a technical high school program that fuses practical and virtual learning opportunities to create a technology-rich learning environment. The first program offered is the CISCO Networking Academy.
