School system aims to be
debt-free by 2012
The Fulton County school board approved a plan in November that will put the district on the path to shedding its long-term debt by 2012, a feat only two other metro Atlanta school systems can claim.
Every year until 2012, the school system plans to take about $32 million raised by SPLOST and apply it to the debt. Additional payments will be made in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Once debt-free, Fulton homeowners will save about $118 in their property tax bill on a $250,000 house and about $237 on a $500,000 house.
Being debt-free also means that if another SPLOST is approved, the school system will be able to dedicate all the proceeds to construction projects and technology.

Three school board members re-elected to office
School board members Linda Bryant, Gail Dean and Linda Schultz were re-elected to four-year terms in November. Each will be sworn-in this month. | |

Thirty-one schools receive state achievement awards
For a fourth year, a third of all Fulton County schools have been recognized for improving and promoting academic excellence in Georgia's Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) recognition program.

Fraud and waste hotline ensures proper use of system's resources
In these difficult economic times, it's more important than ever that resources are used wisely, efficiently and ethically.
Last year the school system established a system that allows concerned employees to report allegations of school-related fraud, waste, inappropriate conduct and/or abuse of resources.
Reports can be accessed and submitted by email, fax, web site or in-person.

Prevention from theft begins with safeguarding items
December is a short school month and soon employees will be leaving their buildings for a long, two-week break.
Empty schools, unfortunately, are an inviting target for petty theft and burglary. Employees can do their part to safeguard their school belongings and equipment during the holiday season by following some proactive tips from the school system's Department of Safety and Security.
